High Involvement Volunteers & Wheeler 101

High Involvement Volunteers are dedicated Christians who desire to dig-in and have personal influence with those staying at Wheeler Mission. Below are ways individuals, families, and groups can directly serve our guests and residents.

If you have any questions, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@wmm.org.

WHEELER 101

If you are an individual or family/group and are interested in volunteering in a more hands-on way with guests and residents, come to Wheeler 101! We desire to reach more guests/residents effectively while also having a meaningful experience for volunteers. Wheeler 101 is geared towards prospective volunteers interested in serving our guests in a more hands-on fashion. A 101 will discuss Wheeler's history, values, what homelessness and addiction are, boundaries, volunteer opportunities, steps to get involved, etc.

Current Individual Volunteer Opportunities

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY

Wheeler's Center for Women & Children is a state-certified child care provider! Women living at the Center for Women & Children, and have young children, have the opportunity for their children to learn while they are there. This allows mom to attend classes in our Education Center or go out and look for gainful employment to provide for her family. The children attend age-appropriate educational programs that include preschool preparation, social behavior lessons, motor skill development, crafts and introduction to Biblical themes. Volunteers help teach, nurture, and prepare lessons with our Children's Ministry staff. Timeframe: Throughout the day, Monday - Friday. (Female volunteers only unless men are accompanied by a female.)

EVENING CHILD CARE/ACTIVITY TIME

During the school year, the children staying at the Center for Women & Children that are of school-age get tutored several days of the week. At the same timeframes, many of the moms and ladies in our programs attend Bible studies, tutoring sessions and other programs. This leaves time for the younger children (pre-school and younger) to get loved on. Timeframe: Monday and Wednesday evenings. (Female volunteers only unless men are accompanied by a female.)

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION

Guests staying at the Center for Women & Children are given a tremendous resource called the Education Center. The Education Center is utilized for GED study, general academic review, computer classes, job skills training and career development. Tutors, job and computer skills assistants are needed in a variety of areas. Timeframe: Throughout the day, Monday - Friday. (Training is provided - female volunteers only.)

GUEST SERVICES CENTER ASSISTANT

Are you retired or have some spare time and you would like to do something rewarding? At Wheeler's Shelter for Men and Men's Residential Center, we have a need for assistants in the Guest Services Center. The various tasks involved will include answering the phone, dispensing items to the men, help carry in donated items, write receipts for donated goods or similar tasks as needed. Throughout the day, Monday - Saturday. (Male volunteers only.)

MENTORING

Sometimes, we just need a listening ear and someone to invest in us. Be someone who can listen, encourage, speak Truth, and get to know the men staying at Wheeler's Shelter for Men. This is a more laid back position that will allow you to spend time talking to and getting to know our guests and residents. Timeframe: Throughout the day, Monday - Saturday. (Male volunteers only.)

TEACH BIBLE STUDY OR LEAD A CHAPEL SERVICE

Wheeler's vision is to see every man, woman, and child we serve equipped to be productive citizens who enjoy lasting success in Christ. Be a part of changing lives at Wheeler by leading a Bible study, Chapel service, praise & worship, or teaching an elective class. Timeframe: Throughout the day, Monday - Saturday.
